Health

Hospital and dental services are available in Longyearbyen, but note that serious injuries or health issues will not be treated locally and will require an air lift to mainland Norway. As Svalbard is not in the EEA the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid, and you will need travel insurance. Make sure this also covers cost for medical evacuation to the mainland should this be necessary.

Fuel

Diesel fuel is available in Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund and interestingly, prices in these two locations may vary significantly.

Pets

There are strict rules on bringing pets to Svalbard, including a complete ban on cats and ferrets. Dogs may be allowed by special application to the Governor.

Expedition Support And Chartering

A number of private and commercial charter operators work out of Longyearbyen, and there are boats of many sizes and standards. We have no direct experience with these operators, so you should carry out your own due diligence.
